5-Axis CNC Machining: The Complete Guide to Precision Multi-Axis Parts

What is 5-Axis CNC Machining?

5-axis CNC machining moves a cutting tool and a workpiece across five axes simultaneously — the three linear axes (X, Y, Z) plus two rotational axes (A and B, or A and C). This lets our machine reach five faces of a part in a single setup, which is essential for complex geometry such as impellers, turbine blades, blisks and compound-angle housings.

Simultaneous 5-axis vs 3+2

Continuous (simultaneous) 5-axis keeps all five axes moving at once for sculpted surfaces and blades. 3+2 indexed machining locks the rotary head at an angle and runs 3-axis cuts — faster and lower cost for parts that simply need access to multiple faces. Our engineers select the most economical mode for each feature.

Single-setup accuracy

Completing a part in one setup removes the tolerance stack-up that comes from re-fixturing between operations. Critical bores, datums and mating faces stay aligned, which is why 5-axis parts routinely hold position and concentricity down to ±0.01 mm.

Better tool reach and finish

The tilted head lets shorter, more rigid tools reach deep pockets and undercuts, reducing vibration and tool deflection. The result is smoother surface finish and longer tool life on hard materials such as titanium and Inconel.

Frequently asked questions

What tolerance can 5-axis machining hold?

We routinely hold ±0.01 mm on critical features and tighter where the design allows, with ISO 2768-mK as the default general tolerance. CMM reports and first-article inspection confirm the measured result.

When is 5-axis worth the cost?

5-axis is most valuable when a part has complex 3D surfaces, compound angles, many faces or tight relationships between features. It also pays off when eliminating multiple fixtures improves accuracy or reduces total lead time.

Which materials suit 5-axis machining?

Aluminium 6061/7075, titanium Ti-6Al-4V, stainless steel, Inconel and mould steels, plus high-performance plastics such as PEEK and PEI (Ultem).

Do you support prototype and production?

Yes — from a single machined prototype to repeat serial production, with the same fixturing and inspection standard throughout.
